ALR Projector Screen Technology, Explained
ALR (Ambient Light Rejecting) screens use a precision-engineered optical structure — usually micro-lenses, micro-louvres or angular-reflective layers — to accept light from the projector while rejecting overhead and side lighting. The result is rich black levels, punchy contrast and saturated colour even in a daylit living room. For ultra-short-throw 4K laser projectors, a CLR (Ceiling Light Rejecting) variant of ALR is essential — it almost doubles perceived contrast versus a plain matte white screen.

For multi-purpose living rooms, a motorized ALR screen between 100" and 120" balances cinema feel with everyday living. For ultra-short-throw 4K laser projectors, always specify a CLR/ALR screen — never plain white. What is the best projector screen for home theatre?+
For a dedicated dark home theatre, an acoustically transparent fixed frame screen with around 1.0 gain (Stewart StudioTek, GrandView Cyber, Elite AcousticPro) gives the most cinematic image and lets you place L-C-R speakers behind the screen. For living rooms with ambient light, a high-quality ALR fixed frame or motorized screen is the better choice.
Which projector screen is best for 4K projectors?+
A 4K projector needs an ultra-fine weave fabric so the screen texture does not limit resolution. We recommend 4K-rated screens from Liberty, Elite Screens, GrandView, Stewart or Eurros, with a gain between 1.0 and 1.3 and certified for native 4K (and ideally 8K) projectors.
What is an ALR projector screen?+
ALR stands for Ambient Light Rejecting. The screen uses an engineered optical layer that accepts light from the projector while rejecting room lighting from above and the sides. The result is much higher contrast and richer colour in living rooms, classrooms and boardrooms where you cannot fully darken the space.

For bright living rooms an ALR (Ambient Light Rejecting) screen — and a CLR variant for ultra-short-throw 4K laser projectors — is essential. They preserve contrast and colour even with windows open and lights on, where a regular matte-white screen would look washed out.
