The Thirteen Steps
Each step gates the next. Skipping an early one shows up as a problem we cannot fully correct later.
- 1. Room assessment — dimensions, construction, ceiling type, surfaces, existing wiring and constraints.
- 2. Listening position — fixed from the furniture and the screen before any speaker position is decided.
- 3. Speaker layout — channel positions, heights and angles marked against the seating.
- 4. AV equipment — receiver channel count, processing capability and amplification requirement confirmed against the layout.
- 5. Cable planning — routes, lengths, gauge and labelling documented on a drawing.
- 6. Pre-wiring — run and tested before the false ceiling and wall finishing close.
- 7. Installation — mounting, levelling, isolation and dressing of cable to the rack.
- 8. Subwoofer positioning — candidate positions measured at the seats before the position is fixed.
- 9. Acoustic treatment — first reflection points, rear wall and ceiling path, where the room and the brief allow.
- 10. Receiver configuration — layout, speaker sizes, per-channel crossovers and bass management.
- 11. Calibration — automatic room correction followed by manual verification of distances and levels.
- 12. Testing — every channel individually, then reference film, music and, where relevant, game content.
- 13. Handover — settings documented, cable routes recorded, and the household shown how to use it.
