    Polk Speaker Placement Guide

Placement is the free upgrade. The same speakers in two positions can sound like different products, which is why we set positions from the seating layout before anything is fixed to a wall or ceiling.

Where should Polk speakers be placed?

Front left and right form roughly an equilateral triangle with the main seat, tweeters near seated ear height, toed in and away from the rear wall. The centre goes as close to ear height as possible, tilted toward the seats. Surrounds sit beside or slightly behind the seating, above ear height, matched on both sides. The subwoofer position is chosen by measuring at the seats, not by symmetry.

Start From the Seat, Not the Wall

Fix the primary listening position first — it is usually determined by the furniture and the screen, not by acoustics. Every speaker position then follows from it. Designing the speaker layout around wall space and then hoping the seat works is the most common reason a system underperforms.

    Distance From Walls

Distance from the rear wall controls bass reinforcement; distance from the side walls controls early reflections that blur imaging. Where speakers must sit close to a wall, a small amount of absorption at the first reflection point and careful room correction recover most of what is lost. Symmetry matters: if one speaker is in a corner and the other is in open space, no amount of correction fully evens the two.

Placement Checklist We Work Through On Site

This is the physical checklist our engineers run before any cabling is fixed.

    • Mark the main listening position and measure to each intended speaker location.
    • Check tweeter height against seated ear height for every ear-level channel.
    • Confirm both surrounds are at identical heights and equivalent angles.
    • Test two or three subwoofer positions against the actual seats before fixing one.
    • Check for hard reflective surfaces directly in front of the centre channel.
    • Verify the speakers are level, isolated from the furniture and not blocking the screen.
    • Photograph and record the final positions for future service and re-calibration.

When the Room Will Not Cooperate

Sofa against the rear wall, an open kitchen on one side, a window where a speaker should go, a pillar in the middle — these are normal. The answer is usually to change the layout rather than to force the textbook one: a properly executed 5.1 in an awkward room beats a compromised 7.1 every time.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How high should surround speakers be?+

Above seated ear height, matched on both sides, aimed across the listening area. The exact height depends on ceiling height and seating, but consistency between the two sides is non-negotiable.

    Should speakers be toed in?+

Usually some toe-in toward the seat improves focus, but the correct amount is found by listening. Rooms with hard side walls often benefit from more toe-in.

How far from the wall should floorstanding speakers be?+

As far as the furniture allows. Even 20–30 cm of additional clearance changes bass quality noticeably.

    Can I place a speaker inside a TV unit?+

It is possible but not ideal — the enclosure colours the sound and blocks the port. If it is unavoidable, the crossover and room correction must be set around it.

Does subwoofer placement really matter that much?+

It is the single biggest variable in bass performance. Two positions a metre apart can measure completely differently at the same seat.

    Do I need acoustic treatment?+

In a hard-surfaced room with tiles, glass and bare walls, treatment at the first reflection points and behind the seating changes clarity more than any equipment upgrade.
