    Polk Subwoofer Guide

More home theatre complaints trace back to the subwoofer than to any other component — and almost none of them are solved by buying a bigger one. This guide covers sizing, positioning and calibration in the order we perform them.

How do I set up a Polk subwoofer correctly?

Size it to room volume, then find the position by measuring at the seats rather than by convenience, then set the crossover from what the main speakers can actually do in the room, then set phase and level against the main channels, then run room correction and confirm with music as well as film content.

Sizing to the Room, Not the Screen

Room volume — length by width by height — sets the requirement, along with how open the space is to adjacent rooms. An open-plan living and dining area needs more capability than its floor area suggests, because the bass energy disperses into the connected space.

    Why Position Beats Model Choice

Low frequencies in a closed room form standing waves, so the same subwoofer measured at two seats a metre apart can differ dramatically. That unevenness is what people describe as 'boomy' or 'slow' bass. Finding a position that measures reasonably at all the seats is the highest-value thing anyone can do for bass quality, and it costs nothing.

    One Subwoofer or Two

Two subwoofers are not about volume — they are about consistency.

    • One row of seats in a small closed room: one well-positioned subwoofer is usually enough.
    • Two rows of seating, or a wide sofa plus chairs: two subwoofers in different positions even out seat-to-seat differences.
    • Open-plan space: two positions help the response survive the irregular room shape.
    • Apartment with noise concerns: two smaller units run at lower levels often transmit less structure-borne noise than one large one run hard.

    Calibration Sequence

The order matters — changing an earlier step invalidates the later ones.

    • Fix the position by measurement at the seats.
    • Set the crossover based on the main speakers' real in-room capability, per channel where the receiver allows.
    • Set phase against the main channels at the crossover frequency.
    • Set level so bass supports the mix rather than announcing itself.
    • Run room correction, then verify distances and levels afterwards.
    • Confirm with familiar music as well as film content — a subwoofer tuned only on film effects usually sounds heavy on music.

    Apartment Considerations

Structure-borne transmission is the issue in a concrete apartment building, not airborne sound. Isolation feet or a decoupling platform, a subwoofer placed away from a shared wall, and disciplined level setting all reduce it. Planning for this at the design stage is far easier than retrofitting after a complaint.

    How LiveInSmart Reviews This Information

Specifications on this page are taken from Polk Audio's own published product information and are re-checked before each content update. Where a value is not published by the manufacturer, we leave it out rather than estimate it — you will see "Specification currently being verified" instead of a guessed number. Everything else on this page is LiveInSmart's own system-design and installation guidance, written by the engineers who commission these rooms.

    • Our authorised-dealer status applies to Polk Audio in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Product recommendations still begin with the room, listening requirement and system design rather than a catalogue.
    • Speaker choice is always validated against the room: dimensions, listening distance, seating layout, ceiling construction, amplification and acoustic treatment.
    • Our commissioning routine includes level and distance setting, crossover and bass management, subwoofer positioning, room correction and a listening check with reference material.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What size subwoofer do I need?+

Size to the room volume and how open the space is, not to the television. A 10-inch unit in a measured position often outperforms a 12-inch unit stuck in a corner.

    Where should the subwoofer go?+

Wherever it measures best at the seats. We test candidate positions before fixing it because the room decides the answer, not the product.

What crossover frequency should I use?+

It depends on what the main speakers do in the room. Set it per channel during calibration rather than copying a number from a manual.

    Are two subwoofers worth it?+

In rooms with more than one seating row or strong modal problems, two subwoofers in different positions give much more consistent bass than one larger unit.

How do I stop the subwoofer disturbing neighbours?+

Decouple it from the floor, keep it away from shared walls, and set the level with discipline. Addressing it at design stage is far easier than afterwards.

Why does my bass sound boomy?+

Almost always room modes plus position, sometimes compounded by a level set too high and a crossover set too low. It is a calibration problem before it is a product problem.
