    Polk Subwoofers

Subwoofer choice is the part of a system where specifications mislead people most often. This page compares Polk's powered subwoofers on published data and explains the placement and calibration work that determines the result.

    What are Polk subwoofers?

A powered subwoofer reproduces the low-frequency effects channel plus everything the main speakers hand over at the crossover. Driver size and enclosure set the ceiling of what a subwoofer can do, but placement decides most of what you actually hear — which is why we choose the position by measurement at the seats rather than by convenience.

What Subwoofers Do in a System

The subwoofer carries the low-frequency effects channel in a film mix and takes over from the main speakers below the crossover. In a small closed room, bass builds up unevenly because of room modes, so two seats a metre apart can measure very differently. That unevenness — not raw output — is usually what makes bass sound slow or boomy.

    Polk Subwoofers Compared

Values below are Polk's own published figures. Where a specification is not published, the cell reads "Specification currently being verified" rather than carrying an estimate. Each model has its own page with the full specification set, system role and installation notes.

    How We Choose Between Them

Selection is a room decision. These are the factors we work through before suggesting a model, in this order:

    • Match driver size and enclosure to room volume, not to the size of the television.
    • In an apartment, plan for structural isolation and level discipline as part of the choice.
    • Consider two smaller subwoofers instead of one larger one where the room has more than one row of seats — two positions even out the response far more effectively than one big driver.
    • Check placement freedom before choosing: a subwoofer that must live in one fixed corner limits what any model can achieve.
    • For mixed music and film use, prioritise control and integration over maximum output.

    Placement and Calibration

We test two or three candidate positions against the actual seats, measure at each, then fix the position. Corner placement raises output but often worsens seat-to-seat consistency. After the position is fixed we set the crossover from the main speakers' real capability, set phase against the main channels, set level, then re-run room correction and confirm with both music and film content.

Common Mistakes We Are Called In to Fix

Most of the rooms we are asked to correct have the right equipment installed the wrong way. These are the recurring ones:

    • Putting the subwoofer wherever the furniture leaves a gap and never measuring.
    • Setting the level for impact during the demonstration and leaving it there, which makes dialogue-heavy content sound heavy.
    • Crossing over too low so the main speakers work below their comfortable range.
    • Standing the subwoofer directly on a hollow wooden floor in an apartment without any isolation.

    Individual Model Pages

Each page lists manufacturer-published specifications, the model's role in a system, room and placement considerations, receiver matching and installation guidance.

    How LiveInSmart Reviews This Information

Specifications on this page are taken from Polk Audio's own published product information and are re-checked before each content update. Where a value is not published by the manufacturer, we leave it out rather than estimate it — you will see "Specification currently being verified" instead of a guessed number. Everything else on this page is LiveInSmart's own system-design and installation guidance, written by the engineers who commission these rooms.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Where should a subwoofer be placed?+

Wherever it measures best at the seats. We test candidate positions before fixing it, because the room, not the subwoofer, decides how even the bass is.

    Do I need two subwoofers?+

In a room with more than one row of seats, or a room with strong modal problems, two subwoofers in different positions give far more consistent bass than one larger unit.

What crossover frequency should I use?+

Set it from what the main speakers can actually do in the room. It is a calibration decision, not a fixed number copied from a manual.

Will a subwoofer disturb neighbours in an apartment?+

Low frequencies travel through structure. Isolation feet or a decoupling platform, sensible level setting and a measured placement all reduce transmission — as does treating the problem at the design stage rather than after complaints.

Is a bigger driver always better?+

No. A larger driver in the wrong position in a small room produces worse bass than a smaller one in a measured position. Placement and calibration come first.
