Surround placement is where most home theatre installations quietly lose their effect. This page covers Polk's surround-role models and the placement decisions that make the surround field convincing in a real Indian living room.
Surround channels carry ambience, effects and panning around the listening area. They should sit beside or slightly behind the seats, above seated ear height, aimed across the seating rather than at one head. In a room where the sofa is against the rear wall, side surrounds mounted level with the seats work better than rear speakers firing into the back of the sofa.
Surrounds are supporting channels: they should be felt rather than noticed. Their tonal character should relate to the fronts, their distances and levels should be calibrated, and their height should be consistent on both sides.

Selection is a room decision. These are the factors we work through before suggesting a model, in this order:
Mount surrounds slightly above seated ear height, beside or just behind the main seats, on both side walls at matching heights, aimed across the listening area. Calibrate distance and level so that surround content does not draw attention to the speaker location. Where the wall cannot take a bracket, floor stands behind the seating are a workable alternative.
