The Monitor XT height module, designed to sit on a floorstanding or bookshelf speaker and reflect height channels off the ceiling. This page sets out the specifications Polk publishes, explains where this model belongs inside a system, and covers the room, receiver and installation decisions that determine how it actually performs.
The Polk Monitor XT90 is a height / elevation module in Polk Audio's Monitor XT range. The Monitor XT height module, designed to sit on a floorstanding or bookshelf speaker and reflect height channels off the ceiling. Whether it suits a particular room depends on listening distance, room volume, amplification, placement freedom and the rest of the system.

Who This Model May Suit
These are planning indicators based on the speaker's role and published specifications, not guarantees. The room, the amplification and the placement decide the result.

Rooms without ceiling cabling
Role Inside a Home Theatre System
A height module reproduces the overhead layer of an object-based soundtrack by reflecting sound from the ceiling. It sits on top of a floorstanding or bookshelf speaker, and it needs its own amplified channel from the AV receiver — it is not an add-on to the speaker below it.
Room Size, Placement and Listening Distance
Reflected height depends on the ceiling: a flat, reasonably hard surface at a normal height reflects predictably. Sloped ceilings, exposed beams, coffers, heavy false-ceiling detailing, fabric or very high ceilings reduce the effect, and in those rooms in-ceiling speakers are the more reliable choice.
Dolby Atmos and the Height Layer
Two modules give a 5.1.2 or 7.1.2 layout; four give 5.1.4 or 7.1.4, provided the receiver can process that many height channels at the same time. Confirm the receiver specification before buying a second pair.
Music Listening
Height channels are normally silent with stereo music unless an upmixer is engaged. That is expected behaviour, not a fault.
Gaming
Games with Atmos support use the height layer for overhead cues. The benefit is real but modest compared with getting the ear-level layer and subwoofer integration right first.
Installation and Calibration
We check the ceiling type first, then set the module's position and the receiver's speaker configuration to match, calibrate distances and levels, and verify with Atmos demonstration content that overhead effects are actually arriving from overhead rather than from the front wall.
For a full walkthrough of how we plan and commission a room, see the Polk installation process. If the room is still under construction, cable routes and speaker positions should be fixed before the false ceiling and wall finishing close.
Related Polk Models to Consider

Specifications on this page are taken from Polk Audio's own published product information and are re-checked before each content update. Where a value is not published by the manufacturer, we leave it out rather than estimate it — you will see "Specification currently being verified" instead of a guessed number. Speaker choice is always validated against the room: dimensions, listening distance, seating layout, ceiling construction, amplification and acoustic treatment.
Our commissioning routine includes level and distance setting, crossover and bass management, subwoofer positioning, room correction and a listening check with reference material.

What amplifier considerations apply to the XT90?+
Polk publishes a sensitivity of 89 dB (1 W / 1 m), a nominal impedance of 4Ω / 8Ω compatible, a recommended amplifier range of 30 – 100 W. Match those figures against your receiver or power amplifier, the size of the room and the levels you actually listen at. Where a figure is not published by Polk, we do not estimate it.
