A height module reproduces the overhead layer of an object-based soundtrack by reflecting sound from the ceiling. It sits on top of a floorstanding or bookshelf speaker, and it needs its own amplified channel from the AV receiver — it is not an add-on to the speaker below it.

Reflected height depends on the ceiling: a flat, reasonably hard surface at a normal height reflects predictably. Sloped ceilings, exposed beams, coffers, heavy false-ceiling detailing, fabric or very high ceilings reduce the effect, and in those rooms in-ceiling speakers are the more reliable choice.
