The largest Reserve centre channel, with twin 6.5-inch Turbine Cone woofers for wide seating arcs. This page sets out the specifications Polk publishes, explains where this model belongs inside a system, and covers the room, receiver and installation decisions that determine how it actually performs.
The Polk Reserve R400 is a large centre channel in Polk Audio's Reserve range. The largest Reserve centre channel, with twin 6.5-inch Turbine Cone woofers for wide seating arcs. Whether it suits a particular room depends on listening distance, room volume, amplification, placement freedom and the rest of the system.
Manufacturer-Published Specifications
These values come from Polk Audio's own published product information for the R400 and were last checked on 2026-09-22. Where Polk does not publish a figure, the row reads "Specification currently being verified" rather than carrying an estimate.
These are planning indicators based on the speaker's role and published specifications, not guarantees. The room, the amplification and the placement decide the result.
Dialogue channel in large rooms
Wide seating arcs
Dedicated theatres
Role Inside a Home Theatre System
The centre channel carries most of the dialogue and much of the on-screen effect work, so it should share the tweeter family of the front left and right speakers. Level and distance calibration then decides whether dialogue sits naturally in the picture or has to be turned up separately.
Room Size, Placement and Listening Distance
Height and angle are everything. The centre should be as close to seated ear height as the furniture allows, tilted toward the listening position when it sits low in a media unit, and never buried inside a closed cabinet. Reflections from a glass table directly in front will smear speech; a rug or cloth runner is a genuinely effective fix.
Dolby Atmos and the Height Layer
In every Atmos layout the centre remains a bed-layer channel. It is not replaced by height speakers — if dialogue is unclear in an Atmos mix, the fault is almost always centre placement, level or crossover, not the height layer.
Music Listening
In stereo listening the centre is normally unused, since two-channel music plays through the front pair. Multi-channel music mixes will use it.
Gaming
Game dialogue and interface cues are mostly centre-channel content. If voices are being lost under effects, check the centre level and crossover before adjusting anything else.
Installation and Calibration
We check the vertical alignment with the screen, tilt the cabinet toward the seats, isolate it from the media unit so panel resonance does not colour voices, then set distance, level and crossover and verify dialogue intelligibility with real content, not test tones alone.
For a full walkthrough of how we plan and commission a room, see the Polk installation process. If the room is still under construction, cable routes and speaker positions should be fixed before the false ceiling and wall finishing close.
Related Polk Models to Consider
Compare the R400 against the models closest to it in role before deciding. Each linked page lists the same manufacturer-published specification set, so the comparison is like for like.
Specifications on this page are taken from Polk Audio's own published product information and are re-checked before each content update. Where a value is not published by the manufacturer, we leave it out rather than estimate it — you will see "Specification currently being verified" instead of a guessed number. Our authorised-dealer status applies to Polk Audio in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Product recommendations still begin with the room, listening requirement and system design rather than a catalogue.
Speaker choice is always validated against the room: dimensions, listening distance, seating layout, ceiling construction, amplification and acoustic treatment.
Our commissioning routine includes level and distance setting, crossover and bass management, subwoofer positioning, room correction and a listening check with reference material.

Is the R400 suitable for home theatre?+

What room considerations matter for the R400?+

Reflections from a glass table directly in front will smear speech; a rug or cloth runner is a genuinely effective fix.
What amplifier considerations apply to the R400?+
Polk publishes a sensitivity of 89 dB (2.83 V / 1 m), a nominal impedance of 4.1Ω minimum; 4/6/8Ω compatible, a recommended amplifier range of 20 – 200 W. Match those figures against your receiver or power amplifier, the size of the room and the levels you actually listen at. Where a figure is not published by Polk, we do not estimate it.
Can the R400 be used in a Dolby Atmos system?+
In every Atmos layout the centre remains a bed-layer channel. It is not replaced by height speakers — if dialogue is unclear in an Atmos mix, the fault is almost always centre placement, level or crossover, not the height layer.
Is the R400 suitable for music as well as films?+
In stereo listening the centre is normally unused, since two-channel music plays through the front pair. Multi-channel music mixes will use it.
How does LiveInSmart install and calibrate the R400?+
