What Each Channel Actually Does
Understanding the roles makes every later decision simpler — including which channel to spend attention on first.
- Front left and right: music, score, on-screen effects and the width of the sound stage.
- Centre: most dialogue and much of the on-screen effect work. The channel that decides whether a film is comfortable to watch.
- Surrounds: ambience, panning and envelopment. Felt rather than noticed when set correctly.
- Subwoofer: the low-frequency effects channel plus everything the main speakers hand over at the crossover.
- Height channels: overhead information in object-based soundtracks, from ceiling speakers or reflected modules.
